Dynamic Duo Chyrel Jackson and Lyris Wallace Are Letting Their Voices Be Heard

"It only [made] sense that [we] would now be writing in the Spirit of these ancestors. Giving

a voice to social issues that plague our modern time," they said in reference.

When asked what was the driving point of their desires to write - "visibility."

Poetry is the rhythmic pulse of storytelling. It is the very heartbeat that allows the expression of the stories of your heart, me

anings of your mind, and sensations of your soul. It is powerful when recited, especially spoken word- an eruptive message that communicates to those present and let's be told precisely what needs to be heard. While it sometimes has no rhyme, it is always with reason, serving as a trigger to more profound thought.

Poetry is the powerful medium in which sister dynamic duo, Chyrel Jackson, and Lyris D. Wallace chose to make their voices heard. Enshrouded in love for reading as a youth, the sisters credit those defining college years as the time when their passions were really revealed. During this time, when their love for literary greats like the passionate Nikki Giovanni, the mighty Langston Hughes, and the dynamic Maya Angelou, to name a few, catapulted their desires to make their voices heard.

The sisters are clear to execute that their work is created to be the beacon, the strong and solid reminder for the voiceless in saying: your words are valued, and your being is enough.

"Words surpass life, love, and loss. Whether written, spoken, or sung, may the readers of our written words find healing and comfort in our poems."

Many social issues are reaching a peak in current day, and the voices of those on the wrong side of the struggles need to have their voices heard. Jackson and Wallace's most recent release, Different Sides of the Same Coin, amplifies that sentiment. From a black woman's perspective, the sisters render a 'modern and sassy' collection of poetry, which embodies the Spirit of the Harlem Renaissance lined with modern-day hemming. Different Sides of the Same Coin highlights the life's struggles as well as its bliss. "Black Expression has never been more vibrant, relevant, and real," they said. "In no short order, we are reminded of why written and spoken words are so vital to the sustenance of African American Literature."

Although Jackson and Wallace share the byline of their newest release, and perhaps a collective view, it is their individual flavors that make them whole. Jackson, a daily writer by habit, focuses on the triumphs and upbeat tempo of life's rewards and celebration of lessons learned. Wallace emphasizes that motivation and inspiration play a big part in her writing's driving force, citing that she is an emotionally driven writer. The beauty of their balance is that they draw inspiration from each other.
